2010.03 Aantekeningen
Jan van Til
Onderstaande
verhaal steeds weer opnieuw uitleggen.
simultaan in beweging is gekomen – uitermate boeiend.
in beweging komen.
Oord stelt (in Business
is goed.
Wat mij betreft: “let the
betekent – klaar!
06. The way a person identifies him/herself and is identified by other
people depends entirely on the (nowadays) varying situations at hand.
When you enter the showroom of a – say – car dealer, you will (most
likely) identify yourself using your name. That is enough, given the situation
at hand. That changes as soon as you indicate to the salesman that you want to
make a test drive. In that new situation (a lot) more identification is needed.
You probably need to show your identity card and your driving licence. In case
you have more than one identity card, you will even have to decide which one to
use in this situation.
Apart from you identifying yourself to the salesman, the salesman will
identify you – situationally – in his own way and all by himself. The salesman
can identify you as a human, a (fe)male, age over 18, not using a wheelchair
etc. In other words: a potential customer.
In fact identity and identification (of anything – not only persons) are
not fixed ‘things’ anymore, but are kind of ‘happening’ all the time. About 50
years ago we lived in a fairly fixed and predictable world. IT changed all that
– qualitatively! Today’s world is a mega dynamical one in which about
everything is (fairly) rapidly changing. That being the case… yes… indeed…
identity is also no longer a sitting duck, but a moving target too. Identity
changes more rapid then ever over time. You’d (also at SEMIC.EU and UN/CEFACT)
better get used to it!
Every situation has its own unique SMALLEST set of attributes really
necessary to identify anything (e.g. a person).
UN/CEFACT – until now! – identified 91 attributes of a person. I am not
at all surprised. And… this amount is still growing. Why? UN/CEFACT tries to
catch ALL situations BEFOREhand. Hopeless. UN/CEFACT will never succeed. Why?
Situations are by definition open-ended – this manifests clearly in today’s
world of dynamics. As long as UN/CEFACT denies that… Hopeless.
In today’s world we see that identity and identification cannot be
defined beforehand anymore. Instead identity and identification unfold
themselves on the spot. We need information structures that support this
unfolding. That’s the way to get it really manageable again! I agree: that’s
more difficult than we are used to right now. But it is as difficult as it
really is. Denying that is the most easy thing to do, but will not get us any
further.
07. You wrote: “But step one remains to agree on the minimal set of
attributes that is needed to identify this person. A lot has to be gained in
harmonizing and agreeing on this set.” Is that true? Can you be absolutely sure
that that’s true? Or do you strongly (want to) believe that it’s true?
In case you firmly (want to) believe so… that’s okay with me. But my
contributions point in a rather different direction – as you might have
noticed. If I understand you correctly you find it a “necessary first step” to
first discard the reality and the consequences of nowadays dynamics in order to
be able to correct that denial later on. In my opinion that’s a rather hopeless
exercise.
09. In
the real world the identity of persons (and: you are right – this applies not
only to people, but to all things) is not a sitting duck any more (it never
was, but it very clearly manifests today). Identity happens. Identity is always
in the process of becoming. Indeed, I fully agree: “systems […] need to learn
attributes and their relationships as they go along and adapt accordingly.”
That’s our true assignment! We need to; we must find a way to connect human
dynamics (according to their nature) to systems statics (according to their
nature). In other words… we need to, we must find a brand new organization of
information, a brand new distribution of basic-information-elements that allow
our systems to “to learn attributes and their relationships as they go along
and adapt accordingly.” Such an organization must be able to support system
statics and connect it at the same time to human dynamics by enabling the
construction of multiple information combinations using the same (evolving)
basic-information-elements over and over again.
With such an organization of information the number of
basic-information-elements making up a person (or anything else) is, of course,
open-ended. Also: in such an organization the number of
basic-information-elements making up a person (or anything else) will not be
found in a single basic-information-element-group (entity), but can and will be
distributed over a number of related basic-information-element-groups.
On some of the related basic-information-element-groups a whole community
(e.g. a network of organizations) agrees with respect to their meaning. Only
such related basic-information-element-groups are fit for and can be used to
meaningfully communicate and reach semantic interoperability within this
community. The larger the community that shares the same meaning with respect
to related basic-information-element-groups the more infrastructural the nature
of that basic-information-element-groups is. Yes, in such a way we successfully
start to build durable and meaningful information infrastructure!
Other basic-information-element-groups are special to smaller groups of
persons (e.g. a single organization, a single department) and can therefore
only be used in a more local sense. This, more local,
basic-information-element-groups are however used in conjunction (relation)
with the more infrastructural ones.
In that way the whole community uses the same infrastructural part to
interoperate, collaborate with each other (in the chain or network). They use
the infrastructural part in conjunction with their more individual and local
parts to interoperate and collaborate internally.
10. You state that “how to deal with Identification Numbers that are
used in some countries” is an interesting question. I agree.
But how about this question: What is the nature of an Identification
Number? For if we do not know what the nature of an Identification Number
really is… how would we be able to properly deal with it?
First of all: how important, in other words how ‘key’, is such an
Identification Number really? As far as I can tell… many, many people consider
an Identification Number as KEY! As highly important. As the main building
block for the identification of preferably all people. I think, we all can
understand and feel sympathy for such an approach.
In my opinion, however, that is not a very practical approach. In
ideality all people have exactly one Identification Number. In reality this is
not the case. In reality lots of people do not have an Identification Number.
Other lots of people do have one Identification Number. And again another
number of people have more than one Identification Number. If it is our aim to
be able to communicate with all of these people… (perhaps especially to the
ones having more than one Identification Number…).
In my view an Identification Number cannot be KEY. An Identification
Number is simply not strong enough, not robust enough, not fit for such a
delicate task.
Next… Is Identification Number an attribute? If so… of what? Of a
physical person? Of a member state? Could it be the case that an Identification
Number is only one of the possible attributes of a relationship between a
member state and a physical person?
In my opinion, the way we deal with Identification Numbers largely
depends on the way we ‘see’ an Identification Number. If we could ‘see’ an
Identification Number ‘simply’ as one of the possible attributes of a certain
relationship relating an organisation (e.g. a member state) and a physical
person in some way… we create lots of flexibility for all organisations (e.g.
member states) to do their very own ‘thing’ with all kinds of Identification
Numbers in their very own way. That’s the kind of flexibility we want to offer
to any and all objects (e.g. people) of any and all organisations (e.g. member
states) – isn’t it?
11. Op Amazon
vond ik een inkijkexemplaar van Origins
of Objectivity van Tyler Burge (2010). Lijkt me een apart boek! Niet
gemakkelijk, maar mogelijk wel belangwekkend. In de auteursindex kwam ik namen
als De Saussure, Peirce etc. niet tegen. Wittgenstein, Rutherford etc. doken
12. I
just had another quick look at the STORK
website. In my opinion the person centric approach is a very promising one!
Any two persons (natural, legal, governmental …) can meet in any communication
action. Per information transaction one person acts as the information
provider, the other one as the information requestor. Roles can change along
with the transactions – all in rapid succession.
In close
conjunction with that, the ownership of information, in my opinion, must be
seen as a crucially important vanishing point. The owner of person information
decides on the specific person information he/she makes available, when, for
what purpose and to what other person. A powerful initiative – which takes ownership
of person information as its vanishing point – can be found at this link.
In my mind
information society is best built on information that is organised in a
coherent contextual structure with which time, ownership of information etc.
are carefully integrated. Objects like driving licences, credit cards etc. are
only our current manifestations of different subsets of information from the
mentioned coherent contextual structure. But we are not limited to these
manifestations: any relevant subset can be combined from the coherent
contextual structure to support any occurring life event. So… my starting point
would be robust information; not an accidental manifestation.
Such a structure
needs to be designed on the scale of at least Europe. Construction (by this
design) can then follow at any smaller scale. Integration of multiple
constructions later on are – by design – no problem at all. Small scale
designs, however, most likely cannot be upgraded to the European or even world
level.
13. Today’s world faces all of us with increased – and ever increasing –
dynamics. Many of the objects/concepts that remained fixed/stable for long
periods of time… nowadays become more and more movable and susceptible to
change. Just think of community relations in our society or gender
changeability. Also think of increasing cross country/continent traffic that
relates us to all kinds/sorts of persons. Even to persons that do not even know
their date of birth and/or place of birth. Even to persons that used to live in
totally different social/societal structures. Even to persons that … (please
substitute something no one of us has come to think of yet).
And we all know that we have to be able to properly deal with this whole
variety of world citizens that reside for some reason for some period in some
way within our territory. Oh, I almost forgot: please also take into account
that some day in the near future scientists will admit that our assumed fixed
DNA is also… fairly susceptible to change. Our fingerprints? Well….
If we really want to be able to accommodate all this, we cannot start in
a small corner, in a world we are familiar with… and hope, doing our very best,
that ‘the rest’ will fit in some day. That would be very, very naïve. That day
will never ever come. If we really want to be able to accommodate all this… we
have to really design for it. It is from such a broad design that robust and
durable construction at any scale (within design boundaries) can and will
follow.
So… in my opinion, it all boils down to the question: What do we really
want? We can, playing the ostrich, turn our back to this new and upcoming
reality. A reality that is inevitable, because it is in the very process of
be-coming right now. We can hold on to the reality we all know so well and are
all so very familiar with; a reality, however, that inevitably is in the
process of be-leaving us. The choice is ours.
Why would someone still be looking for a (static) minimum set of
attributes for the identification of physical persons? To be honest: I have no
clue.
scherper invult.
dingen doen; o.a. in dezelfde ruimte leven)… tegelijk ook allerlei eigen dingen
doen in verschillende contextuele ruimten.
problemen.
Zoals gezegd: hoe vul je de
CR scherper in?
1. Behoort een actor wel/niet
tot een CR? Zit, m.a.w., een CR per definitie tussen actoren in? En hoe zit het
met informatie over actoren?
“contextuele ruimte”.
17. I would like to draw your attention to a Dutch
document. Below my (short) explanation of two figures of the document.
Figure 1 (page 11) models the logical set of natural persons (natuurlijk
persoon) and the logical set of person identities (persoonsidentiteit). A
specific person is a (one) natural person that can identify itself in many ways
using many different specific identities. A specific natural person manifests
itself in a certain situation using one of his identities. Further relations will
be (in principle) attached to person identity; not to natural person.
Without going into details: all information that strictly applies to a
natural person is considered to be in the rectangle next to natural person (the
same goes, of course, for person identity).
Figure 3 (page 14) is an extension of figure 1: the logical set of
sovereignties (soevereiniteit) is added here. Now a specific natural person can
be – not directly, but via one of his person identities – related as a register
person (registerpersoon) to a specific sovereignty. One of the modelled
attributes of register person is an identification number (here the Dutch
burgerservicenummer).
About contextualisation of information: A (Dutch) burgerservicenummer,
in this model, is a burgerservicenummer in the context of a register person,
which, in turn, is a register person in the context of sovereignty and person
identity.
In this model a natural person can easily have several identification
numbers and can be easily related to several sovereignties. In case the
European governments all use this model, differing register persons can be
related to one and the same natural person. In case a specific natural person
has more than one (Dutch) burgerservicenummer… this will, of course, be of
special interest to the Dutch authorities.
One can also see that (Dutch) burgerservicenummer is not KEY, but only a
simple attribute – valuable in some cases; irrelevant in others. Any such a
number is simply not suitable and not able to carry all the information
concerning one natural person for all his identities.
Depending on the situation at hand and the corresponding identification
needs… some person attributes will be relevant (maybe even ‘core’) where others
are not interesting at all. Are we (still) really looking for a fixed set of
attributes (to start with)?
In mijn blog Baanbrekend
20. I agree: “many member states have regulated by law the use of a
national identity number.” It is exactly for that reason that these numbers are
“constricted to national contexts”. It makes no sense denying/ignoring that. In
fact such realities are our important starting points on our way to reach
success!
So… my starting point is to leave the way individual member states
(“national contexts”) deal with person information – including identification…
unchanged. Member states just act the way they individually act. And that’s
perfectly all right to start with.
But then… how do we establish coherence between all these differing
member state behaviors with respect to person information? If member states
want/need to understand each other with respect to persons, if they want/need
to collaborate with respect to persons… some coherence needs to be established
somehow with respect to persons.
So… somewhere in between we need something like a, say “(person)
information roundabout”. Via such an infrastructural facility individual member
states are able to meaningfully communicate with each other (with respect to
persons).
The example I provided in my previous contribution shows a first onset
(so: simple, initial, incomplete and immature) to a model of such an ‘in
between’ information roundabout. I illustrated this roundabout with only identification
number. However: please do not focus on that number – as if such a number would
be capable of any and all identification! This is NOT, I repeat NOT, the case –
as I extensively explained in my previous and earlier contributions!
The simple roundabout model wants to show that any member state can
(initially) keep on using the person identification systems they now (legally)
use. There is plenty of room for that behaviour in the model!
In addition and at the same time the simple roundabout model wants to
show that there is plenty of room also for creating coherence between member
states! The roundabout model acts as an encompassing model containing a single
as well as broader context; a context exceeding the various and varying
contexts of the individual member states.
21. Op Synergetics zwierf ik
vandaag (nog) even rond en las van jouw hand het volgende: “Luk has set up a
network of world class experts, making Synergetics an industry thought leader
in the field of competencies and context-driven semantics.”
what are the attributes?” is Stephan Meyer (SEMIC.EU Clearing Process Manager bei
Person, Core xyz, Core Anything aankijken.
Mijn indruk is dat men CCTS
best mogelijke resultaat… leeg is?
23. Thank you for sharing this interview.
My impression from the discussion on LinkedIn and this interview is that (the
people of) SEMIC.eu experience CCTS as too big, too heavy, too unmanageable and
therefore felt the need to come up with something different.
The designers of CCTS somehow recognised the essence of context. They
defined a fixed number of context categories that together with identified Core
Components in some way yield appropriate (?) Business Information Entities.
SEMIC.eu seems to abandon this concept. SEMIC.eu seems to be headed for
the selection of a set of cleverly selected attributes – a set that gets
labelled Core <x>, e.g. Core Person. Of all possible Lego bricks with
respect to <x> SEMIC.eu chooses a few to be the Core of <x> and
every Core <x> user complements this Core <x> with his own specials
to make it fit for use in the particular situation (context) at hand.
This sounds great. However, in my opinion, the main weakness of this
approach is the assumption that such a set can be successfully found – to the
satisfaction of all/most of the participants. Though the participants in the
discussion on LinkedIn disagree on a lot of things… they all agree on the vast
diversity of situations in which we can meet persons. It is for that reason
that such a set – forming Core Person… will be… most likely… empty.
And that truly sounds great (if one allows him/herself to ‘see’ it)! For
such an empty set is the only set that is perfectly capable of uniting all the
differences in the various and varying situations annex contexts in which
<x> plays its role.
So… if you’re asking me… with a minor change in perspective SEMIC.eu can
achieve far better results.
nemen.
26. Sjonge, met zo’n verklaring
(WCIT 2010, Amsterdam) kan zo zo’n beetje de hele ICT industrie alle tien haar
dikke vingers de komende jaren – likkebaardend – aflikken.
Maar, uh, by the way, hoe
moeten overheden privacy, vertrouwen enzovoort van ‘hun’ individuele burgers
eigenlijk duurzaam gaan invullen? “Trust and security are the foundations on
which our economic and social lives are built” – zo meldt de verklaring
terecht.
27. I’d like to bring to your attention a small,
yet powerful information model. It’s made by Pieter Wisse of Information
Dynamics.
This model makes clear the enormous variety of personal identities (2) a
person (1) can take as he/she gets related to organizations/communities (3).
For that matter you can think of governmental institution(s), Hospitals,
Libraries, Supermarkets, Financial institution(s), Insurance companies etc.
etc.
These high level personal identities are situationally particularized. A
natural person (1), for example, can identify him/herself in a particular
situation as a resident (8) in conjunction with particularizations (5) and (2).
Because there are many, many different particular situations thinkable like
(8), the information node (2) will be empty (as I explained in an earlier
contribution). This emptiness, in fact, turns it into a powerful hinge – able
to connect person information contained independently in the various person
administrations of the different member states annex governmental institutions.
The identity information for the Core Person that SEMIC.eu is looking
for, will, in fact, be situationally distributed on various information nodes
(like (8), (5) and (2)) in the presented model.
The way SEMIC.eu looks for attributes for Core Person yields a (short)
list that will be presented as a kind of initial hinge to be positioned
somewhere near (2) in the model – denying/discarding the variety pointed out
above. The penalty for this denial will be, very predictable, failure
altogether. Even when SEMIC.eu mentions that it’s initial Core Person is only a
start – to be developed later on. Why? Because this has been tried – many, many
times – already. The results? Disappointing. Whether you try it with the 91
attributes of UN/CEFACT (in combination with UCM) or the 4 or 5 attributes of
SEMIC.eu or the x attributes of initiative y …. Hopeless!
Instead of looking for a minimal set of attributes for Core Person,
SEMIC.eu would do a great job (and Europe a great favour) when it acknowledged
that some kind of central information switch is necessary to contain a scalable
structure of information nodes that is able to switch/connect person
information residing in the several separately and independently maintained
databases of the several governmental institutions of the several member
states.
Yet, based on the contributions in this thread, I cannot escape the
impression that SEMIC.eu (still) very much prefers a small, CCTS-like, static
Core-Person blueprint. A blueprint that will act as a request to all
governmental institutions of the several member states to comply with it. If you’re asking me: they won’t.
persoon-als-personeelslid). Organisatie x blijft ‘in’ A en B impliciet.
Verder verschijnt
in beide figuren (natuurlijk) persoon. Nu kunnen de relaties ‘personeelslid’ en
‘relatie’ verschijnen waarmee resp. persoon-als-personeelslid-bij-organisatie en
persoon-als-relatie-van-organisatie hun vaste plek krijgen.
Hoe gaat de rotonde als
voorziening tussen A en B nu werken? Behoort heel figuur 2b tot de
informatierotonde?
over (natuurlijk) persoon betreft?
personeelslid betreft?
meest/gemakkelijkst geloofde voorganger(s).
over in aanschouwen.
hoe-we-het-altijd-al-deden.
34. When we are discussing (Core) Person – as we do in this thread – it
is a (more than) revealing idea to have a look in a dictionary. Please look for
hyponyms for the word Person. They appear in ‘countless’ numbers! This means
that Person is a very, very special concept. Therefore Person simply needs to
be treated that way too. When you say that “it's obvious to any practitioner
that a fixed initial attribute set is required”… then who is really
off-topic here? It’s just because of this wide variety that a designer MUST
reach beyond the topic in order to get the topic durably addressed! To me your
addition “since
the flexible scheme is many years in the future” is a fallacy that keeps
durable solutions in the future forever!
Because you mentioned NIEM, I dived into it. Below you find my
impression.
The document Introduction
to the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) states in chapter “NIEM
Key Concepts” that “key concepts are essential to understanding the purpose,
architecture, processes, and other capabilities of NIEM, as well as to
establish a common knowledge base with which to develop the ability to use NIEM
effectively.” I fully agree!
Then the chapter continues: “The fundamental building block of NIEM is
the data component. Data components
are the basic business data elements that represent real-world objects and
concepts. […] Components that are frequently and uniformly used in practice are
specified in NIEM and can then be reused by practitioners for information
exchanges, regardless of the nature of their business or the operational
context of their exchanges, provided they are semantically consistent.”
Let me briefly discuss this last fundamental quote. Person information
is used (see the lively discussion in this thread) in a very, very wide variety
of situations, i.e. in a very, very wide variety of different meanings. So… the
way person information is used is very frequently but… far, far from uniform.
The quote says: “Components that are frequently and uniformly used in practice
are specified in NIEM”. So… it is NOT the case that person information “can
then be reused by practitioners for information exchanges, regardless of the
nature of their business or the operational context of their exchanges”, since
it is evidently clear that the requirement “provided they are semantically
consistent” is NOT met.
From the above it can be concluded from NIEM’s very own key concepts (!)
that NIEM is NOT fit for use by SEMIC.eu’s Core Person.
35. You suggest to us all that “the NIEM book should not be judged by its
cover”. In my opinion I judged NIEM by (one of) its conceptual grounds. To me
NIEM’s conceptual grounds differ completely from what you call “its cover”.
Let us assume that NIEM is not truly serious about its own conceptual
grounds. Let us assume that NIEM’s conceptual grounds are only meant to supply
its users with a rough idea to get them going. That would be insane – wouldn’t
it?
To me it would. And it is precisely for that reason that I take NIEM’s
conceptual grounds very serious. For if these conceptual grounds are not
solidly… grounded, then any user group is lost right from the beginning. From
the moment on that conceptual grounds prove to be wrong, incomplete etc. NIEM
as a whole is unfit for (SEMIC.eu’s) purpose. This, however, does not mean that
any and all of the NIEM results are worthless to and cannot be used (by
SEMIC.eu) anymore! I agree with you on that one, Greg.
The conceptual grounds of NIEM are very similar to the conceptual
grounds of CCTS. Both (still) firmly believe in absolute meaning: meaning of
information can be meaningfully predefined. Both are totally unaware of the
notion that we nowadays have to distinguish between machine-meaning and human-meaning.
Machine-meaning must be defined in advance due to the interaction level
machines are confined to. Human-meaning, however, works on a higher interaction
level. A level which very much (qualitatively even) deviates from the machine
level. Human-meaning develops dynamically, develops on the fly – as it clearly
manifests in today’s dynamics and rapid changing worlds. It is this human level
of meaning that needs to be (understood and) durably translated/modeled into
the machine level of meaning in order to achieve true semantic interoperability
(with respect to (core) persons) for humans.
But as long as we’re (mainly) focused on our machines and their
peculiarities… instead of our customers, civilians etc. and their
peculiarities….
But as long as we are unaware or simply deny or ignore the qualitative
differences between machine/human interaction levels…
But as long as we choose to believe in the practicality, usability,
extendibility, durability etc. of our constructs when using methods/frameworks
like NIEM, CCTS, …
Well, in that case we won’t get any other results but the results we
achieved over the last decades. And, since we’re headed for a really sound and
durable Core Person … !!! Well….
time en any place – als eerste in aanmerking komen?
38. Bestaat er wel over-heid
zonder onder-daan?
Waar is onder-daan gebleven?
maat-schappijparticipanten).
Overbekend voorbeeld is onze
toekomstscenario’s ICT? Zonde van al dat belastinggeld. De overheid formuleert
toekomstscenario’s stelselmatige informatievoorziening? Prachtig!
40. Wat (mij) met name opvalt
in jouw Kijk
ontstaan rapportageverplichtingen” (sectie drie).
Peirce) in.
In zo’n wolkje komen nu soms
weer in andere IRn zitten.
Mooi!
